A banner protest which took place on 27th of April outside Vattenfall’s Moabit Power Station in Berlin, Germany.
During April several biomass industry events are taking place in Europe, including the AGMs of Drax and Vattenfall and the Argus Biomass Conference. Members of our Forest, Climate and Biomass Working group held a day of action on the 27th of April to demand that Drax and Vattenfall stop burning trees for energy.

Vattenfall is a Swedish energy company which, for many years, was amongst the EU’s top three CO2 emitters from burning fossil fuels. In 2018, the company adopted the motto “fossil free living within one generation” and since then, has started to slowly phase out coal burning. In order to do this however, the company has begun to burn ever increasing amounts of forest wood. Vattenfall burns forest wood in Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands and has large expansion plans, especially in the Netherlands (Diemen) and Germany (Berlin). Vattenfall is also a trader in wood chips and wood pellets. The Biomass Working Group has published this briefing and sent a joint letter to Vattenfall, demanding that they stop burning biomass immediately.
On Wednesday 27th, banner protests were held at the site of Vattenfall’s proposed new biomass plant in Diemen, Netherlands and outside their Moabit heat and power plant in Berlin.

At the site of Vattenfall’s proposed new biomass plant in Diemen, Netherlands, protesters blocked access via a bridge and held banners.
Drax power station burns more wood than any other power plant in the world and is also one of the world’s top producers of wood pellets. Our member group, Biofuelwatch, coordinated protests outside the Drax AGM in London on the 27th of April. Campaigners from across the North of England also planned actions to coincide with the Drax AGM, in Liverpool, York, Hull and Leeds. More details about the protests can be found on the Biofuelwatch website. You can find out more about Drax from BankTrack’s Dodgy Deal profile and more about the Axe Drax campaign here.
