Biomass Action Network

The Biomass Action Network was created in 2018 under the umbrella of the Environmental Paper Network in response to the growing threat to forests from the rise of industrialized biomass energy production. Since then we have united more than 200 NGOs across the world around a shared vision to protect forests from the large-scale burning of wood for energy.

We connect and enable collaboration between organizations from all around the world who are campaigning on forest, climate, and biomass issues.  We unite to shape policies from local levels to international UNFCCC conferences.  We collaborate together at various times, such as the annual International Day of Action.

The Biomass Action Network has global, regional and thematic email lists and organizes monthly global meetings, as well as regional and thematic meetings. We also facilitate ad hoc groups which form for specific projects, such as Planning for UN Climate negotiations (Climate COPs), and our International Day of Action.

The Biomass Action Network is coordinated by Reija Mikkkola (Policy and Campaigns) and Sophie Bastable (Organization and Outreach) If you are interested in joining one of the Working Groups, please contact Sophie Bastable.

BAN's Strategic Priorities

Build an international movement to stop large scale biomass energy. We build campaign connections between people in countries along the biomass supply chain, by linking up organisations opposing biomass energy at the points of production, as well as consumption.

Change the narrative around biomass as a renewable energy and combat misinformation. We develop sharp, simple messaging to get to the heart of the issues, characterising biomass as a false solution and highlighting impacts along the supply chain to challenge misleading industry narratives.

Build pressure to exclude biomass energy as a way of meeting climate change targets at the international level. We attend international climate conferences and events to raise awareness that treating biomass energy as carbon neutral is leading to negative outcomes for the climate, forests and people.

Elevate the environmental and social justice issues of biomass energy. We support groups impacted by the biomass industry and amplify their voices by holding an annual International day of action to raise awareness of the negative consequences of biomass energy all around the world.

Get biomass out of renewable energy policy. We put pressure on policy makers to get biomass out of renewable energy policies and promote protection and restoration of natural forests as a climate mitigation method instead.

Stop the money flow for biomass energy. We oppose public and private financing of biomass energy and seek to make investors aware that the biomass industry would likely collapse without government subsidies. We promote reallocation of these subsidies to genuine renewable energy solutions, such as wind and solar.
