The map below shows the current extent and planned expansion of the biomass industry across the globe. The data on the map has been collected from openly available sources by members of the Biomass Action Network worldwide. This is a constant work in progress and the map is updated regularly as new information becomes available.
The map shows biomass facilities that use either woody biomass as their main fuel or co-fire biomass with coal in coal power plants. It also shows pulp mills which burn woody biomass to generate electricity, iron and steel producers that use charcoal made from woody biomass in their furnaces, and agricultural uses of woody biomass – such as burning it to dry grains before they are stored. In addition it shows large-scale pellet mills that produce industrial pellets from biomass. Click on the “i” on the map for more information.
These kinds of installations have been chosen for monitoring because they can be a major threat to forest ecosystems if the fuel comes at volume directly from forests. The map excludes power plants that are primarily run on black liquor (a by-product in pulp mills), bagasse (the residue of sugarcane) or post-consumer waste wood.
