The EU is currently revising its rules around packaging and packaging waste.
Paper consumption in the EU continues to rise, as does the volume of waste paper and card packaging that is thrown away. In 2020, the EU produced more than 10kg extra paper packaging waste per person, than in 2012. A new regulation from the EU has the potential to address this troubling trend, but in order to achieve that it would need to become significantly more robust.
This briefing, from EPN, Fern, Zero Waste Europe and the Rethink Plastic alliance, presents several recommendations for the regulation to truly reduce the negative environmental, social and climatic impacts of the paper and packaging industries.
