Mercados de Carbono, Florestas e Direitos: Uma Série Introdutória

Durante décadas, os povos indígenas e os seus representantes exigiram que todas as políticas,financiamento e iniciativas destinadas a enfrentar a crise climática respeitassem e protegessem os seus direitos, culturas, meios de subsistência e conhecimentos. Insistiram em ser tratados como atores centrais – e como detentores de direitos – na concepção e implementação de soluções climáticas.

Uma solução climática proposta, que vem rapidamente ganhando atenção nas discussões climáticas em todos os níveis, são os "mercados de carbono".

Muitos povos e comunidades indígenas já estão sendo confrontados com os desenvolvimentos do mercado de carbono em seus territórios e estão expressando que precisam de mais informações sobre esse tópico para entender o que esses mercados podem significar para eles. A linguagem técnica e complexa que é frequentemente usada nas discussões sobre esses mercados não está ajudando. Esta curta série de “explicadores” é um primeiro passo para responder a esta procura de informações mais claras. Selama beberapa dekade, masyarakat adat serta yang mewakilkan mereka telah menuntut agar semua kebijakan, pendanaan dan program-program yang bermaksud menangani perkara krisis iklim agar tetap menghormati dan melindungi hak-hak mereka, budaya mereka, serta kehidupan dan pengetahuan mereka. Mereka telah menekankan bahwa mereka harus diperlakukan sebagai pelaku utama – sebagai pihak yang memiliki hak – dalam implementasi solusi-solusi iklim.

Salah satu solusi iklim yang digagaskan dan sedang mendapat perhatian banyak dalam diskusi-diskusi iklim di berbagai tingkatan, adalah ‘pasar karbon’.

Banyak masyarakat dan kelompok adat yang telah dihadadapi oleh pihak-pihak pengembang pasar karbon di wilayah mereka sendiri, dan masyarakat/kelompok ini menyatakan bahwa mereka ingin memiliki lebih banyak informasi tentang topik ini agar lebih paham terdahulu tentang apa pasar karbon dan bagaimana hal tersebut akan berimbas pada mereka. Bahasa teknis dan rumit yang seringkali dogunakan dalam diskusi tentang pasar-pasar ini tidak membantu dalam menjelaskan poin-poin yang ingin disampaikan pada masyarakat. Susunan “artikel uraian” ini adalah Langkah awal dalam menjawab tuntutan masyarakat untuk informasi yang lebih jelas. Pengurai ini berfokus secara khusus pada hubungan antara pasar karbon, hutan, dan hak-hak masyarakat adat.

Webinar – The Pulp and Paper Industry and it’s #BigBadBiomass investments in the EU

Webinar, focussing on the EU-s three largest pulp and paper-producing countries: Sweden, Finland and Portugal.

Pulp and paper companies are increasingly investing in biomass plants which burn sometimes very large quantities of wood additional to the energy needs of the pulp mills themselves. Excess electricity is sold to the grid – a lucrative deal due to biomass subsidies and the exemption of biomass energy from the EU Emissions Trading Scheme.

Burning the Future

Southern Forest Conservation Coalition gathered citizens, educators and scientists for a day of action. Participants took to the Cape Fear River to learn about the wood pellet industry. Their goal is to raise awareness and engage the community.
