In September 2013, international and local conservation organisations spoke with one voice to introduce Performance Milestones for Asia Pulp and Paper’s (APP) Sustainability Roadmap – Vision 2020 and Forest Conservation Policy the company announced in February. Under the umbrella of the Environmental Paper Network, this collaborative effort seeks to provide clarity to responsible purchasers in the marketplace. APP’s policy was a significant step forward but proof of its implementation is required if companies are to avoid brand risk. The milestones were developed to define what that proof looks like over the first year of the policy, and are entitled The First Test. The press release can be found here.
Progress on the Performance Milestones needed to be verified by independent audits. Their auditing helps customers and investors determine whether APP is effectively implementing its policy commitments and can help guide action by other pulp/paper companies in Indonesia and elsewhere.
In 2015, the Rainforest Alliance completed an independent audit of APP’s progress on its Forest Conservation Policy, informed by the EPN’s Performance Milestones. The review led to changes in APP’s implementation plan, but some key aspects of the commitment remain insufficiently fulfilled still.
