In fewer than
ten years, the Network has collectively achieved
numerous and significant victories for our climate,
forests and communities.
Macro-level
indicators of our movement’s collective success:
Acres Protected:
Recent conservation victories protected over
5-million acres in the Great Bear Rainforest of
British Columbia and 55-million acres of Northern
Boreal Forest.
Certified Forestry:
The Forest Stewardship Council’s (FSC) paper-related
certifications in North America increased from just
3 in 2003 to 1,880 in 2010 and certifications
increased more than 200% over just the past two
years alone. Total FSC-certified forestland in
North America increased from 12 million acres in
2003 to over 100 million acres today. Most recently,
almost a million hectares of managed forest included
in the Great Bear Rainforest agreement were FSC
certified.
Corporate Change:
Hundreds of newenvironmental policies
by large corporate paper purchasers like book,
magazine and newspaper publishers, catalog
retailers, banks, office supply stores, household
paper-supply companies, the fashion industry, and
others.
Recovered Fiber Use:
Recycled fiber use has grown significantly: in 2000
recycled paper manufacturing capacity utilization in
the U.S. hovered at around 70% and is now operating
at greater than 95%.
Recovery Rates:
Market demand for recycled fiber has supported a
growth in paper recovery from 46% in 2000 to 57% in
2008.
Marketplace for
Eco-Papers: Hundreds of new
eco-papers have been introduced into the marketplace
over the past two years and that number continues to
grow.
